Mountian Science Nights

The Mt. Hood Corridor Wildfire Partnership is hosting a monthly science-based series where scientist share with the public the latest wildfire research relevant to the Mt. Hood Corridor. The Rendezvous Grill in Welches is providing the venue for the events.

On March 5 with strong turn out and standing room only, Dr. Andrew McAvoy from Oregon State University (OSU) explained why the Mt. Hood area is considered high hazard and what type of fire are possible in the future.

On April 2 Dr. Jeff Kline from the Pacific Northwest Research Station shared his research and longstanding interest in forest fire ignitions, both human and natural, and what can be done to reduce them.

On May 7, Dr. Andrew Merschel, Scientist and Co-Director of OSU’s Tree Ring Lab discussed his project to view centuries of fire records and discuss how these records inform wildfire resilience and protection. “Fire on the Mountain: a history of fire and forest dynamics on the Mt. Hood National Forest” will help increase community awareness of the historical and current fire regime on Mt. Hood and help them make decisions on how they want to address wildfire resilience and forest health.

The series will continue after fire season in the Fall.
